In response to this situation, Jialede has established three complete technical routes: "molecular homology substitution, performance-similar substitution, and next-generation PFAS-free substitution," and has achieved stable mass production and supply in China. This article outlines the core challenges faced by enterprises after production shutdowns, compares the positioning and parameters of the three corresponding alternative products, highlights the key points for switching gas phase degreasing equipment, and provides actionable selection and decision-making suggestions to help factories smoothly complete media replacement without sacrificing process stability.
Novec 7100 is a low-boiling-point, non-flammable hydrofluoroether fluid. Thanks to its excellent material compatibility, extremely low surface tension, and stable dielectric properties, it has long been used in mature processes such as cleaning electronic components, vapor-phase degreasing of precision parts, workpiece dehydration and drying, lubricant coating dilution carrier, and heat conduction temperature control. These processes are mostly fully validated, and if supply is lost, replacement is far more difficult than with ordinary industrial consumables.
1. Supply chain disruption: Imported goods are exhausted, and production lines face shutdowns at any time after inventory is depleted, and it is difficult to find completely equivalent products in the short term.
2. High cost of re-verification: Processes in fields such as aerospace, medical, and semiconductor have already passed compliance audits. Changing the solvent hastily means going through the entire verification process again, which is time-consuming and costly.
3. Regulatory compliance pressure: Global PFAS management continues to be upgraded, and enterprises not only need to solve the current replacement problem, but also need to plan ahead for future compliance media solutions.
Therefore, when selecting alternative solvents, one should not only consider whether the boiling points are close, but also comprehensively evaluate multiple indicators such as boiling point, vapor pressure, solubility, material compatibility, dielectric properties, compatibility with existing equipment, verification requirements, and long-term regulatory risks, so as to minimize the production accidents caused by process changes.
Based on extensive field testing, Jialede offers three differentiated paths, allowing companies to choose the appropriate path based on their validation level, cost budget, and long-term compliance goals.
Route 1 | YBS-J7100: Molecular homology, minimize redundant verification
YBS-J7100's core component is nonafluorobutyl methyl ether (C₄F₉OCH₃), with a purity ≥99.5%. Its molecular structure is completely identical to Novec 7100, with a boiling point of approximately 61°C. Key indicators such as vapor pressure, density, viscosity, latent heat of vaporization, and dielectric constant are highly comparable to the original manufacturer's. It has an ODP of 0, low GWP, and is non-flammable with no flash point.
• Direct Drop-in Replacement: Existing gas phase degreasing equipment requires no hardware modification; production can be started simply by fine-tuning the temperature control parameters according to the boiling point of the medium.
• Low validation cost: The workload of revalidation can be greatly reduced for production lines that have already been validated, making it suitable for industries with strict audit requirements such as medical devices and avionics.
• Excellent material compatibility: Excellent chemical inertness, compatible with metals, PCBs and most plastic elastomers; low surface tension allows it to penetrate deep into micropores, blind holes and thread gaps, and volatilizes without leaving any residue.
• Recyclable/Stable Supply: Supports distillation and recycling, ensuring a stable domestic supply chain and completely eliminating the risk of import disruptions.
Applicable scenarios: Vapor phase degreasing, precision electronic cleaning, dehydration and drying, lubrication carrier and thermal management applications where the existing Novec 7100 has been fully validated.
Route 2 | YBS-7100: A cost-effective choice for general cleaning with similar performance.
YBS-7100, also a hydrofluoroether (HFE), has a different molecular structure than Novec 7100, but its physical and cleaning properties are very similar: boiling point 56℃, vapor pressure slightly higher than 7100, no flash point, non-flammable, ODP=0, excellent material compatibility, and suitable for general precision cleaning and vapor phase degreasing processes.
• Significant cost advantage: The overall cost of procurement and use is better than that of the molecular homology version.
• Low barriers to entry: No need to modify existing equipment; mass production can begin after completing pilot testing and material compatibility testing.
• High cleaning efficiency: Fast evaporation rate, suitable for production lines with high cleanliness requirements but relatively relaxed validation constraints.
Applicable scenarios: Cleaning of general electronic components, vapor phase degreasing of general precision metal parts, coating dilution carriers, and other production scenarios that allow for small-batch verification.
Route 3 | YBS-Z Series: PFAS-free next-generation solution for long-term compliance
The YBS-Z series adopts the new generation PFAS-free chemical system HFCO/HFO, with GWP<1 and ODP=0, circumventing future PFAS regulatory restrictions at the molecular level. The product has moderate oil stain cleaning capability, is non-flammable, and has good chemical stability, making it suitable for degreasing precision metal parts, cleaning PCB flux, cleaning semiconductor and aerospace components, and serving as a carrier for diluting silicone oils and fluorinated greases.
• Completely compliant: Completely free of PFAS, easily meeting increasingly stringent regulatory requirements such as EU REACH and US EPA.
• Stronger cleaning power: Improved compared to traditional HFE, capable of handling medium-load oil stains.
• Requires complete verification: It can be adapted to existing gas phase degreasing equipment, but the molecular system is different. Mass production must be carried out after the material compatibility and process verification are completed.
Applicable scenarios: Aerospace, medical, and semiconductor forward-looking projects that plan to avoid PFAS risks in the long term, as well as companies that do not require molecular consistency and are willing to invest in full verification.

Future compliance requires full verification. |
Note: For all domestic alternatives, it is recommended to complete the test samples first, and conduct verification of material compatibility, cleaning effect, NVR non-volatile residue, SIR insulation, etc. based on your own process before mass production.
When switching from Novec 7100 to Galard fluorinated media, direct addition and mixing are strictly prohibited. The standard procedure is as follows:
1. Thoroughly remove old solvent: Drain all the original Novec 7100 from the tank and pipelines. Do not rinse the equipment with water. If the old liquid has been acidified, the tank needs to be neutralized and cleaned to avoid cross-contamination.
2. Take safety precautions: Before operation, check the SDS safety data sheet and wear the corresponding protective equipment; avoid leaving solvent containers open for extended periods to reduce evaporation loss.
3. Reset temperature control parameters: Adjust the temperature control parameters for gas phase degreasing according to the boiling point of the new medium (see table below).

Note: Control panels for vapor phase degreasing equipment may vary between brands. Some models may not include all of the above control points. Please refer to the equipment manual and on-site guidance from Jialede's technical engineers for the final instructions.
4. Small-batch validation: After completing the above steps, conduct a small-batch trial production to confirm that the cleanliness and material compatibility indicators meet the standards before changing the solution and putting the entire production line into operation.
• Minimal validation: Complete process validation has been obtained (high-review industries such as medical and aerospace), and we hope to minimize the need for re-validation → Prioritize YBS-J7100 molecular homology substitution.
• Cost control: General precision cleaning and verification constraints are not stringent, but overall cost control is required → Prioritize the evaluation of molecular solutions similar to YBS-7100, and mass production after completing material compatibility and cleaning tests.
• Looking at the long term: We focus on future PFAS regulatory risks and are willing to invest in full verification for medium- to long-term planning → Prioritize testing the YBS-Z PFAS-free series.
Regardless of which option you choose, it is recommended to apply for samples for small-scale testing first: including workpiece material swelling and corrosion testing, cleaning residue testing (NVR, water burst test, FTIR, SIR insulation), and cyclic distillation stability testing. Only after all indicators meet the factory standards should you start large-scale production with a different solution.

The discontinuation of Novec 7100 is not essentially a simple replacement of consumables, but rather an opportunity for precision manufacturing companies to re-examine supply chain security and regulatory foresight. If the production line is highly sensitive to the validation process, the molecular homology solution of YBS-J7100 can minimize switching costs; if the cost-effectiveness of purchasing for general operating conditions is more important, YBS-7100 can be quickly implemented with minimal validation; if the goal is to complete the technology switch before PFAS tightens significantly, the YBS-Z series is a more reliable long-term solution.
It's important to note that there are no universal, all-purpose alternative solvents in the precision manufacturing field. Workpiece materials, contaminant types, existing equipment models, compliance requirements, and validation levels all vary, making sample testing an indispensable step before mass production.
We welcome you to contact the Jialede technical team to apply for free samples, obtain TDS/SDS data, and schedule a one-on-one working condition assessment and replacement solution development.
