Fluorinated-Grease PFPE

Perfluoropolyether grease has excellent high temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and is often used in extreme environments (such as aerospace, semiconductor equipment, precision instruments, etc.). However, if it is found to be too viscous during use, it may affect the lubrication effect or equipment operation. The following is a detailed analysis and treatment method for its "too sticky" problem:


Analysis of the reasons for excessive viscosity
1. Improper selection of base oil viscosity: The viscosity of perfluoropolyether grease is determined by the viscosity of the base oil (perfluoropolyether). If the viscosity grade of the selected base oil is too high (such as ISO viscosity grade greater than 460), it will show obvious stickiness at room temperature.
2. Excessive thickener content: The content of thickener (such as polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE) in the grease is too high, which will increase the overall viscosity (such as NLGI grade exceeding No. 2), and thus appear more viscous.
3. The operating temperature is too low: The optimal operating temperature of perfluoropolyether grease is usually -20℃~260℃. If the ambient temperature is lower than its applicable lower limit, the fluidity of the base oil decreases, which will cause the grease to thicken.
4. Contamination or deterioration: After the grease comes into contact with water, dust or chemical media, the structure may change, resulting in an abnormal increase in viscosity.

Specific treatment methods
1. Adjust the use environment or increase the temperature under working conditions: If the viscosity is caused by low temperature, the grease can be restored to fluidity by preheating the equipment or increasing the ambient temperature. Reduce the load or speed: High-viscosity grease may increase friction under high-speed or heavy-load conditions. The operating intensity of the equipment can be temporarily reduced to observe whether the viscosity affects the performance.
2. Dilution treatment (caution required) Use special diluent: Perfluoropolyether grease needs to be diluted with fluorinated solvents, and avoid using ordinary organic solvents (such as ethanol, acetone) to prevent damage to the grease structure. Note: Dilution may shorten the lubrication life of the grease. It is only suitable for temporary adjustments, and it is recommended to operate under the guidance of professionals.
3. Replace the appropriate type of grease to reduce the viscosity of the base oil: choose a perfluoropolyether grease with a lower viscosity grade. Adjust the consistency grade: reduce the NLGI grade from No. 2 to No. 1 or No. 0, the consistency is softer and the fluidity is better. Consult the supplier: provide the equipment operating conditions (temperature, load, speed) and the existing grease model, and professionals will recommend the appropriate product.

Precautions
Avoid mixing: Mixing perfluoropolyether grease with other types of grease (such as lithium-based grease and silicone-based grease) may cause structural damage and aggravate the viscosity problem.
Safety protection: Wear gloves and protective tools during operation and operate in a well-ventilated environment.
Performance test: After any adjustment, the fluidity, lubrication effect and equipment operating temperature of the grease must be tested on a small range of equipment first, and then fully applied after confirming that there is no abnormality.

During a conversation with Factory Manager Zhang, a Jialede sales manager learned that one of his factory's PCB baking tunnel ovens was experiencing chain lubrication issues. The manager recommended the company's YBS-1103 perfluoropolyether oil. The equipment uses three rows of large roller chains and operates in a high-temperature environment of 80°C. Zhang previously faced numerous issues using liquid lubricants:

The machine's automatic lubricator struggled to accurately control the amount of oil injected.


The oil easily leaked onto the floor, causing waste and pollution.


The lubricant had specific requirements: low volatility and long-lasting lubrication, requiring no re-lubrication for six months to a year. Furthermore, the company sought to avoid dust generation from drying solid lubricants or rapid drying of liquid lubricants.

After a detailed discussion with laboratory technicians, the Jialede product manager and laboratory technicians, considering the customer's equipment operating conditions—consistent operation at 80°C, demanding chain lubrication, low volatility requirements, and long lubrication intervals—decided to recommend YBS-1103 perfluoropolyether lubricant. Laboratory validation data showed that YBS-1103 fully met the technical requirements for this application scenario. Factory Manager Zhang, upon repurchasing the product, stated that it not only met the performance requirements for low volatility and long-lasting lubrication, but also effectively reduced lubricant loss for the factory, truly achieving cost reduction and increased efficiency.


The Jialede team, leveraging its extensive experience, provided Factory Manager Zhang with an efficient and reliable lubrication solution precisely tailored to the client's needs through a single phone call and combined with laboratory test data. Recently, Jialede successfully customized a high-performance semi-fluorinated grease for a customer's process environments for pneumatic cylinders and pneumatic tools. This case not only addressed the customer's unique operating environment challenges, but also further demonstrated our R&D and service capabilities in high-end lubrication solutions.


The customer previously used Kluber 352 series grease in their pneumatic cylinder applications. Through AI-powered search and technical comparison, the customer sought a comparable alternative with a more competitive price. After in-depth communication, we learned the following operating requirements:


Temperature range: -30°C to 120°C, fully meeting the typical operating conditions of pneumatic tools and cylinders;
Process requirements: The grease must possess excellent adsorption, resist water dilution, and maintain low resistance to ensure smooth cylinder operation;
Special resistance: The grease must be resistant to the effects of carbon dioxide and sulfur-containing environments;
Usage requirements: Estimated consumption is approximately 180 kg over several months;
Cost target: Maintaining performance while keeping the price at half that of the original product. Our Jialede R&D team quickly responded to these demands, developing a proprietary semi-fluorinated grease formula. 

This product demonstrates excellent adsorption, water resistance, and low friction, and is stable in CO2 and sulfur-containing environments, making it a perfect replacement for the existing Kluber 352. This case study not only helped the client achieve a breakthrough in both performance and price, but also showcased Garode's expertise in customized lubrication solutions.

Recently, Jialede developed a wide-temperature-range high-performance product based on perfluoropolyether (PFPE) grease to address the harsh operating conditions of needle bearings in customers' air compressor main units. This grease maintains stable lubrication in environments with large swing angles, 1500 rpm oscillations, and long-term high loads of 2000 N.



Needle bearings in air compressor main units are typically subjected to frequent oscillations and high-rhythm stress, and during long-term use, they experience operating temperatures exceeding 100°C, even reaching 220°C under instantaneous extreme conditions. Ordinary greases are prone to problems such as high-temperature evaporation, shear thinning, or low-temperature hardening under these conditions. Jialede's PFPE grease possesses excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance, low-temperature fluidity, and extremely strong mechanical stability, covering a wide operating range from -40°C to 280°C.

The customer's validation program includes:
* Low-temperature performance testing: After the sample is left to stand at -40°C for 8–24 hours, the rheological state of the grease is observed and the compressor starting current is measured.


* High-temperature durability testing: Continuous validation for at least 3 months under operating conditions exceeding 100°C.


Approximately 50g of grease is required for each compressor's needle roller bearing.


To meet the above requirements, we have provided 200g samples of perfluoropolyether grease for customer testing.
